Clinic Guidelines for Caregivers

** 3rd Sunday of the Month, BY APPOINTMENT ONLY ** **For FERAL CATS ONLY. **    For an appointment, please e-mail Dr. Fry @ fairchildfoundation@gmail.com   Please be advised there may be up to a 2-month waiting list. =^..^=

If you have an Indoor Cat, please visit our Low Cost Spay/Neuter page for other resources as we do not provide care for pet cats.

**Scroll Down to Read information on our Ovaban Oral Contraception Program for Feral Colonies** Available only to our Active Colonies in Berks County, PA and surrounding areas.  FeralStat users should contact their personal veterinarian to discuss their situation.

**ADMIT:  On the scheduled clinic date, you need to arrive between 8:45 am and 10 am.  All feral (unsocialized) cats and kittens MUST be admitted in a Humane Box Trap or Transfer Cage for safety purposes.  If you have trapped 2 cats in the same cage, do not attempt to remove one. You must also bring a pet CARRIER with TWO TOWELS for recovery & discharge.  Make sure your carrier is secure with no missing bolts or clips and a functioning door.   For safety reasons, we cannot accept a carrier that has been taped to hold it together.

**DISCHARGE:  You must be available to pick up your cat between 11am-2pm that day when contacted by Fairchild.  You will need to have a safe place to keep the cat in the carrier until he or she is fully recovered from anesthesia. We recommend not releasing a feral cat until the next morning.  Keep the carrier covered with a towel or blanket until the cat can be released--this helps to calm the cat.  You may offer the cat food and water 3 hours after surgery, however, many times they are too stressed to eat.

-->RESCUE REMEDY is a flower essence that may be added to the water to help calm down the cats (available at GNC and health food stores).

-->FELIWAY (Comfort Zone) is a pheromone spray that may be sprayed on the towels to also help reduce stress (available at PetSmart, PetCo, etc).  If you have any problems with your cat after surgery, please e-mail Dr. Fry @ fairchildfoundation@gmail.com or call 610-763-8382.

**Identification:  Write your LAST NAME and colony name on masking/duct tape and affix it to the carrier, trap, and trap cover. DO NOT mark directly on any Fairchild equipment.  When picking up your kitty, please check the carrier before leaving the clinic to insure you have the right cat.  Also, remember to take your equipment with you.

**Donation:  A minimum of $35 donation is required at the clinic for each cat (note: legally this is not tax deductible as the service you are receiving costs far mare than the donation).   Please make checks payable to the Fairchild Foundation.

**Surgery Towels:  Please remember to return all borrowed surgery towels (washed and dried) to the Fairchild Foundation at your next clinic appointment.

**Cancellations:  If you are unsuccessful with trapping, we ask that you please call 610-763-8382 and leave a message.

OVABAN (by prescription ONLY to the colonies that Fairchild is helping sterilize. If you do not live in our area, please contact your veterinarian.)

Ovaban is utilized as a prescription oral contraceptive to reduce the number of litters born into a colony while the cats are being humane trapped and neutered.  The dosages indicated below are low enough to be safe but effective based on previous studies.  We have had great success in preventing HUNDREDS of Pregnancies in the past 10 years, thus reducing the unwanted cat overpopulation BY MILLIONS!

NEVER give more medication than is directed.   Human Megace (40 mg/ml) is diluted down to 5 mg per ml with distilled water--this suspension is used instead of crushing the name-brand Ovaban 5 mg tablets (1 tablet = 1 ml).

It is very important that you continually evaluate the size of your colony and insure that you are using the correct dosage and frequency for the size of your colony.

  •
    •   Total Number of Cats in the ColonyDosage per colony / Frequency
    • < 5 cats   .5 ml ONCE a week
  • 5-7 cats   1.0 ml ONCE a week
  • 8-11 cats   1.5 ml ONCE a week
  • 12-15 cats  1.0 ml  TWICE A WEEK
  • 16-19 cats   1.5 ml  TWICE A WEEK
    20-23 cats   1.6 ml  TWICE A WEEK
    24-27 cats   2.0 ml  TWICE A WEEK
    28-31 cats   2.2 ml  TWICE A WEEK
    32-35 cats   2.5 ml  TWICE A WEEK
    36-39 cats   2.8 ml  TWICE A WEEK
    40 + cats   3.0 ml  TWICE A WEEK

    1)    This medication MUST be mixed in CANNED cat food and served on multiple plates or dishes (NO PAPER).  Use one 5.5 oz can of cat food for every 3 cats in your colony.   It is very important to spread it out on as many plates as possible so the entire colony is being medicated as evenly as possible.

    2)    Shake the bottle of medication vigorously as the ovaban settles to the bottom.  It is very important that the ovaban is mixed thoroughly before dosing to avoid under/overdose.     Divide the appropriate dose of medication for your colony evenly among the plates of food and mix it thoroughly into each plate of food.
    3)    DO NOT DISPENSE IN MILK OR MILK PRODUCTS!

    4)    Store medication with bottle tightly capped in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.

    5)    Wash syringe with dish soap and water. Rinse thoroughly.  Allow syringe to air dry on a paper towel.

    6)    DO NOT SKIP OR MISS A DOSE!  If you were unable to dose the cats on your scheduled day, do so on the very next day and resume your schedule the following week. For colonies that require a frequency of 2 x per week, the dosages MUST be spaced out.

If you are currently on our Ovaban program, Please call Dr. Fry @ 610-705-5801 for refills 2 weeks in advance—medication may be picked up at Banfield Pottstown (1112 Town Square Road—Route 100 & Cedarville Rd) or at our monthly surgery clinics @ ARLIf you were using Feral Stat, you will need to purchase Ovaban or Megesterol Acetate from another source.   THIS IS ONLY AVAILABLE TO COLONIES ON OUR ACTIVE LIST AND CAN NOT BE DISPENSED TO THOSE OUT of STATE.
